Kimi Raikkonen: Back to Beginning
The most awaited news of the year so far has been finally disclosed by Ferrari. Young blood, Charles Leclerc will join 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel next year for the 2019 season bringing to end all the speculations. The exit of Ferrari's last world champion Kimi Raikkonen was not much of a surprise to many but the Finn seems to be in a fighting form of late.
Kimi Raikkonen started his career with Sauber and him ending the same at the team which helped him achieve his childhood ambition of following his idol James Hunt into F1 is rather dramatic. It's like a hollywood blockbuster: Prodigal son leaves his home. Wins races and a world championship and returns for a parting shot.
Sauber is no race winner nor a podium finisher for years. The last ever podium they had was in Japan 2012 with Kamui Kobayashi. The team has been struggling with numerous issues ever since finishing last in the constructors last year. Even with an impressive resurgence in competitiveness this year thanks to a powerful Ferrari power unit, Sauber are still ninth in the standings behind the Toro Rosso which has a Honda power unit.
Only time will tell how the team develops next year. In Kimi, they get the a driver who knows how to win and who knows how the car should work. In a smaller setup, Kimi might become potent like he did with Lotus with which he won 2 races.
